How does an actor get nominated for an academy award?

What are the steps for an actor getting nominated for an academy award? I know that the 1st people to nominate an actor are the members such as other actors and directors and so on, but how is the process done? How do they get to 5 Nominees?

First thing is the film that the actor gets is in has to play in a theater in LA for seven days. Then the members of the actors branch (only the actors) of the academy nominate the performances they think deserve an oscar (they usually nominate somewhere between 3-5 performances). The ones with ones with the most nominations are the ones that get the official nominations.
